The chamber women’s choir Muusad (artistic director Olev Pürg) and Ukrainian conductor Illia Humeniuk present a unique concert exploring the dialogue between Western musical heritage and Hindu mythology.
Central to the program is the image of the Black Madonna, reflected in Pau Casals’ Nigra sum and Francis Poulenc’s Litanies à la Vierge Noire, his first sacred work, accompanied by organ. Special focus is given to the music of Gustav Holst, including his luminous eight-part Ave Maria and selections from Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, enriched by the shimmering sound of the harp.
The program also features works by North American composers: Cecilia Donkin’s powerful Magnificat for soloist and 12-part a cappella choir, and Clifford Demarest’s lyrical Sunset, where harp and organ weave a rare and refreshing soundscape that bridges East and West.
