Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918) was an Estonian composer, organist and choirmaster. He was born into the family of Johannes Tobias, a piano tuner and organ master at Käina Church parish in Hiiumaa. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied organ with Louis Homilius and composition with Professor Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, becoming the first Estonian composer with an academic training in composition. Tobias laid the foundations for the development of Estonian musicology and composed the first works in many genres of Estonian music. These include the first symphonic work, the first cantata ("Johannes Damascenus"), the first pathetique overture ("Julius Caesar"), the first oratorio ("Jonah's Mission"), the first piano concerto and the first piano sonata. Several of Tobias's choral songs are still well known today, including "Eks teie tea", based on a biblical text, which has been performed five times at the Song Festival.
