Svite tyhyj (Lumen hilare, Orthodox Singers, V.Petrov)
Svite tyhyj (Lumen hilare, Orthodox Singers, V.Petrov)
It is a hymn from All-Night Vigil in Ortodox church, but this prayer is also included in Catholic and some modern Anglican and Lutheran liturgies. This hymn is to be sung at the lighting of lamps in the evening and is sometimes known as the “Lamp-lighting Hymn”. In my piece I tried to immerse the listener into the atmosphere of the firsts centuries of Christianity with a very measured pace and dark, low sound and also very simple melody. This technique (I call it Patternism), when I use some patterns, in this work, helps listeners to be in this prayerful and meditative state.
Recording of the premiere performance from the International Music Day concert by the Orthodox Singers ensemble under the direction of Valery Petrov.
